I'm a day late. (Or 20 years late, depending on how you're counting.)
I'm not sure what else I have to say about it. I think I'm going to refrain from listening to or reading myself until I'm sure I can do it as kindly as a friend would.
You know how sometimes a horrible picture of you surfaces? You look frumpier than usual. You look haggard. A friend doesn't look at that picture and think, "My friend looks frumpy and haggard." A friend thinks, "Oh, hey, there's my friend. I'm glad to see her." I think it's helpful to look at yourself the way a friend would. A kind friend. Not the negative nelly friend who isn't really a friend.
And so I want to listen to my music as a friend would--without critique.
And I want to read my book as a friend would--without editing.
